Psychiatry

A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor with postgraduate training in Psychological Medicine, grounded in both Medicine and Neurology.

Psychiatrists are uniquely qualified to assess an individual’s: -

  • Mental state
  • Diagnose psychiatric conditions,
  • Offer psychological therapies,
  • Prescribe medications when appropriate
  • Support recovery

Using the comprehensive Biopsychosocial Model, psychiatrists consider a person’s experiences, environment, family and cultural background, medical history, physical examination findings, and lab results to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. They then develop a personalized treatment plan.

Psychiatrists often work in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals. Together, they support clients and their families or caregivers in managing mental health challenges, promoting recovery, and maintaining a meaningful, fulfilling life.

Mental Disorders may include Affective, Behavioural, Cognitive, Developmental, Perceptual abnormalities, etc. A thorough medical evaluation—including screening for conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disorders, vitamin deficiencies, migraines, and epilepsy—is essential for an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Where relevant, family members may also be assessed to identify or prevent similar conditions. Optimal outcomes are achieved through a combination of appropriate medications, psychoeducation, and family involvement, all of which enhance understanding, adherence, and long-term wellness.

At Prafulta, our psychiatrists are sensitive and give medication only when required. They also give proper time to the patients and respond to all queries patients may have about the efficacy and side effects if any for medication.
